The 2022 Land Rover Defender was reintroduced for the 2020 model year and this year sees the addition of a 5.0-liter supercharged V8 (518 hp/461 lb-ft) paired to an 8-speed automatic transmission. It will be available on the two-door Defender 90 priced at $97,200 and four-door Defender 110 priced at $100,400. Pricing for the base Defender with the 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 (296 hp/295 lb-ft) is $47,700 and $50,500 making the Defender V8 a premium offering.

The V8 engine posts a 0-60 mph time of 4.9 seconds with a top speed of 149 mph for the Defender 90. This makes it the fastest, most powerful production Defender ever produced. Both 90 and 110 body styles will offer two V8 trims. In addition to the more powerful engine, these Defenders have uniquely tuned suspension and transmission systems that include custom spring and damper rates.

When it comes to off-roading, there’s a new electronic active rear differential to improve handling with a new yaw controller that provides greater control during cornering. The Terrain Response 2 system is also specially calibrated to ensure the Defender V8 offers peak performance whether it’s on pavement or in the dirt. It features a new Dynamic mode that’s exclusive to Defenders with the V8 engine.

In addition to its capability, the Defender V8 has special exterior elements to distinguish it from the rest of the lineup. These include unique exterior badging, unique quad exhaust tailpipes and unique 22-inch alloy wheels. There are also Xenon Blue front brake calipers with 15-inch front brakes. Even the exhaust note has been tuned to provide its own distinctive sound, which can be enhanced by selecting Dynamic mode in the Terrain Response system. There’s a choice of Carpathian Grey, Yulong White, or Santorini Black exterior colors.

Inside, the Defender V8 has seats trimmed in Ebony Windsor leather with Miko suede and Robustec accents. There’s a Satin Black exposed cross beam and a four-spoke steering wheel covered in Alcantara. Even the treadplates where given special treatment with an illuminated V8 script.

The ultimate in exclusivity will be offered by the V8 Carpathian Edition. It will be available only in Carpathian Grey with a contrasting Narvik Black roof, hood, and tailgate. Exterior upgrades include unique badging, Satin Black tow eyes, Carpathian Gloss front and rear skid pans and front grille bar. The exterior is also covered with a protective film that creates a semi-matte finish while protecting the Defender’s paint.

The 2022 Land Rover Defender V8 is set to go on sale this summer.

WHY THIS MATTERS

While the Defender was already a capable vehicle, adding a powerful V8 engine improves its performance both on-road and off. It’s not just about the power, however. The specially tuned suspension and transmission combined with the exclusive Dynamic driving mode will significantly enhance the Defender V8’s off-road chops.
