The covers have been pulled off the refreshed 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan to reveal a compact 5-passenger crossover with a slew of enhancements that are sure to increase the appeal of Volkswagen’s best-selling vehicle. Changes for the model year include a refreshed exterior and interior, new technology, new driver assistance features and trim levels reconfigured to offer greater value to buyers.
Passers-by will notice the new front fascia, which has been completely redesigned to be more “iconic and authentic,” says Volkswagen. LED headlamps are now offered and wheel sizes vary from 17- to 20-inches in diameter. At the rear, the “TIGUAN” lettering has been moved to the center (just below the VW logo), to complement the standard LED rear lamps.
The interior boasts Volkswgen’s next-generation steering wheel that features “touch islands and sliders” for easier operation. The HVAC controls are now offered with the digital Climatronic touch interface and the MIB3 modular infotainment system is more robust (App-Connect, enhanced voice recognition, USB-C charging, upgraded available navigation system, and SiriusXM with 360L streaming and satellite content). All models are equipped with the Volkswagen Digital Cockpit (8- or 10-inch digital displays, depending on trim). Those who want a bit more flair will appreciate the available 15-color ambient lighting option.
The standard powertrain — on all models — is Volkswagen’s proven turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine (rated at 184 hp/221 lb-ft of torque). An 8-speed automatic transmission that drives the front wheels is standard, but the automaker’s 4Motion all-wheel drive is optional for those seeking more capable four-season performance.
Volkswagen will offer four different trim levels on the 2022 Tiguan:
- S — 17-inch wheels, LED headlamps, 8-inch digital cockpit, heated front seats, front and side assist, and more.
- SE — 18-inch alloy wheels, power tailgate, wireless app connect, power driver seat, adaptive cruise control, lane assist, emergency assist, and more.
- SE R-Line Black — 19-inch alloy wheels, R-Line bumpers, ambient lighting, panoramic sunroof, and more.
- SEL R-Line — 20-inch alloy wheels, 10-inch digital cockpit, Fender premium audio package, leather seating surfaces, park assist and area view, and more.
While pricing information has not been released as of today, the automaker has stated that the revised 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan will go on sale in September, 2021.
