The Jeep Grand Cherokee enters its fifth generation with the introduction of the first-ever three-row version of this full-size SUV. The 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L will be available in a range of four trims with seating for up to seven passengers. A 3.6-liter V6 engine with 290 horsepower is standard with the option for a 357-horsepower V8 on select trims.
The Grand Cherokee L features standard Uconnect 5, which is 5 times faster than before and includes an optional 10.1-inch display screen. The system supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, over-the-air updates, and is Amazon Alexa compatible for a seamless connected experience. There’s also dual smartphone connectivity and a Wi-Fi hotspot that can handle up to eight devices.
Over 110 safety and security features include standard automatic emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection as well as front and rear parking sensors. Top trims see the addition of Level 2 automated driving technologies with hands-free driving assist, capable of keeping the Grand Cherokee L centered in its lane and even slowing for tight curves. There’s also an available night-vision camera that uses infrared sensors to detect pedestrians or animals and alerts the driver to their positions.
And since this is a Jeep, there’s plenty of off-road capability. Four-wheel drive is standard with three systems with features including an available two-speed transfer case and an electronic limited-slip differential for the rear axle. There’s an available traction management system with five different settings to manage a variety of conditions from rocks to snow to mud and sand.
Top trims include standard air suspension that provides more ground clearance and improved water fording. It automatically adjusts to road conditions and can also be manually controlled with a choice of five ride heights. It can manage up to 24 inches of water fording and has a maximum ride height of 10.9 inches.
The 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L will be available in Laredo, Limited, Overland, and Summit trims with production set to begin in the first quarter of this year. Pricing has yet to be announced.
